Abortion numbers in Scotland reached their highest level since 2008 during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the most recent figures.
New data from Public Health Scotland reveals 13,815 abortions were performed in 2020, an increase of 209 operations from 2019 and a maximum of 12 years.
The rate of abortion per 1,000 women, ages 15 to 44, increased from 13.2 in 2019 to 13.4 in 2020, the highest rate ever since the regulations changed in 1991 to require the approval of two doctors. .
Figures show that there were 209 selective impotence miscarriages last year and a 10% increase in recurrent miscarriages, rising to 5,020 from 4,581 the previous year.
The UK’s pro-life Right to Life group attributes the increases to self-performed home abortions, introduced after the outbreak of the pandemic.
The controversial use of postal abortion pills allows women to receive abortion pills by mail after a phone or electronic consultation with an abortion specialist.
The plan, which the Scottish government is considering extending, has come under scrutiny after a secret investigation found evidence that abortion pills had been sent to women who provided false personal information and pregnancy dates.
Last year, the NHS England chief midwife warned of the “increased risks” of home abortion in a leaked email. Police also opened a murder investigation after a baby was miscarried at home in 28 weeks.
“It is a national tragedy that 13,815 people went missing due to abortions in Scotland last year,” said Kathryn Robinson, spokeswoman for Right to Life UK.
“Each of these abortions represents a failure of our society to protect the lives of babies in the womb and a failure to offer full support to women with unintended pregnancies.
“In 2020, Scotland came together as a nation and made great sacrifices to protect the vulnerable from COVID-19. Sadly, while protecting a group of vulnerable people, we, as a society, have also ended thousands of young lives. vulnerable through abortion.
“This significant increase in abortions coincides with temporary measures allowing ‘DIY’ home abortions in the UK. Since governments allowed ‘DIY’ home abortions, many stories of illegal late-term abortions and security abuses have come out. the light.
“We call on the Scottish government to immediately end these ‘DIY’ home abortion schemes.”
